Baker County

Baker County and Baker City are named after Edward D. Baker. A close friend and political ally of Lincoln, Baker was elected to the US Senate in 1860, the first Republican elected to that office from the west coast. He received a commission as a colonel at the outbreak of the Civil War and was killed at the Battle of Ball’s Bluff in 1861. He is the only sitting US Senator ever killed in battle.
