Benton County
Benton County was named for Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri. Benton (1782-1858) was the first person to serve five terms in the US Senate and was an ardent advocate of western expansion. He was instrumental is establishing the first Homestead Act and pushed for an continental railway system. Lincoln was influenced by Benton's ides and later pressed for these when he became President.
