Douglas county

Douglas County

Douglas County is named after Senator Stephen A. Douglas. Douglas was a political foe of Lincoln’s and the two were engaged in the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates over the question of slavery of 1858. Lincoln lost the Illinois senate seat to Douglas that year. Even though Douglas was essentially pro-slavery, he was an ardent supporter of the Union when the war broke out. He was an advocate for Oregon statehood
