Harney County

Harney County is named after Major General William Harney. Harney served with Captain Abe Lincoln during the Black Hawk wars. He was commander of the Department of Oregon 1860-61. While returning to Washington DC at the outset of the Civil War he had the distinction of being the first person taken prisoner by a confederate force. He was offered a command in the CSA, but refused and was released
