FREE CONCERT FEATURING CIVIL WAR MUSIC AT Portland's LONE FIR CEMETERY on SATURDAY, November 15
A free concert featuring the marching songs, ballads and hymns of the Civil War period will take place starting at 9:00am at Lone Fir Cemetery located in the Buckman Neighborhood at S.E. 21st and Morrison. The concert, performed by the 3rd Brigade Band made up of Civil War re-enactors, will be conducted by Lt. Steve Betschart of Company B 71st PA Volunteer Infantry (Sons of Veterans Reserve.)
The concert will include the following titles: "Battle Cry of Freedom", "Abide With Me", 'Marching Through Georgia", "Vacant Chair", "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp", 'Red, White and Blue", "Hail Columbia", "Faith of Our Fathers", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", "Marching Along" and more. "The songs are period correct tunes," said Betschart. "Our sources for music have been the 26th North Carolina Band, Heritage Americana Band and the Smithsonian, among others."
The Third Brigade Band is an all-volunteer band composed of five cornets, one flute/piccolo, one tuba, two baritones, one euphonium, one field snare and one bass drum. The members hail from as far away as Eugene, and Independence, Dallas, Forest Grove, Aloha and Vancouver, Wa. The concert immediately precedes the main OLBC Special Event starting at 9:30am which will reconstruct the original program held in November 1863 to dedicate the newly constructed cemetery adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield where thousands of soldiers from both sides perished during the decisive battle taking place during the first 3 days of July 1863.
