America's first "First Lady", Mary Lincoln

Professor Catherine Clinton is coming to Portland State University for a very special appearance on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 to talk about her latest book about America's first "First Lady", Mary Lincoln. Educated at Harvard, Sussex, and Princeton, Professor Clinton holds a chair in U.S. History at Queen's University, Belfast and is a member of the advisory committee to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote about this book: " In this remarkable book, Catherine Clinton displays an emotional depth in her understanding of Mary Lincoln that has rarely been revealed in the Lincoln literature." James Mc Phearson's review said that "With sensitivity and empathy, she bring us the real Mary Lincoln- a tragic yet compelling figure." Civil War filmmaker Ken Burns stated: " We can never get enough of Lincoln, and we can never get enough of his family. Catherine Clinton's fascinating book feds that hunger."
