Roswell Lamson of the USS Gettysburg

DATE: January 9, 2008

EVENT: January Meeting of the Civil War Round Table

TITLE: Oregon's Top Naval Hero- Roswell Lamson of the USS Gettysburg

LOCATION: Cramer Hall, Room 494 on the Portland State University campus

TIME: 7:30pm

The CWRT will discuss the story of a true Oregon-grown Naval Hero: Roswell Lamson. This Union Naval Officer was the youngest and most daring of the naval officers to patrol the Atlantic Coastline during the Civil War naval blockade. Lamson grew up in Oregon, fought Indians as a boy and "went down to the sea in ships."

As editors James and Patricia McPherson noted in their 1997 award-winning compilation of his letters entitled: "Lamson of the Gettysburg"; America's real life counterpart to Horatio Hownblower "had an uncanny knack for being where the action was."

The Civil War Round Table is an affiliate of the Friends of History at Portland State University; which provides support for the History Department and produces special events like the annual Endowed Lecture in History. The Civil War Round Table has joined forces with the Oregon Lincoln Bicentennial Commission to help plan Oregon based-events to commemorate the 200th Birthday of our 16th president.

Unless noted, all Civil War Round Table programs take place in Room 494 of Cramer Hall on the Portland State University campus at 1721 SW Broadway and start promptly at 7:30pm. Programs are free. Check our website at: www.history,pdx,edu/foh/FOHround.htm or call (503)725-5473
